The Mercury WH-series carburetor is a staple in high-performance marine racing, used in engines such as the Mercury Racing SST-120 (2.0L, WH-46), SST-140 (2.4L, WH-31), S2000, and European XR2. These carburetors require precise fuel management, especially in extreme racing conditions, where fuel slosh can cause starvation and inconsistent combustion.
To address these challenges, we now offer Slosh Tube Kits that include (12) nickel-plated brass elbow L-fittings (Buckshot Racing #77, 94090) and 3 feet of Tygon F-4040-A Yellow, Translucent Blue, or Translucent Red Fuel Bleed Line. This kit allows racers to update or convert any Mercury WH carburetor for stable fuel flow and enhanced performance.
The nickel-plated brass elbow fitting (Buckshot Racing #77) is the best replacement for the Mercury OEM 22-94090, offering superior corrosion resistance and durability. These fittings are critical for slosh tube systems, which stabilize fuel movement in the float bowl, ensuring a steady fuel supply during aggressive acceleration, deceleration, and cornering.
Without proper fuel stabilization, high-speed racing can lead to fuel starvation, aeration, and erratic throttle response. The Slosh Tube Kit, when integrated into the carburetor, prevents power loss caused by fuel slosh, ensuring a consistent air/fuel mixture for maximum performance.
Convert WH "Fishing" Carbs to WH "Race" Carbs
Beyond stabilizing fuel, these fittings are essential for converting standard WH "Fishing" Carbs into WH "Race" Carbs. Stock WH fishing carburetors, commonly found on Mercury outboards, are designed for low-RPM fuel efficiency rather than high-speed performance. With the nickel-plated elbow fittings and slosh tubes, a WH fishing carburetor can be transformed into a race-ready carburetor.
The Slosh Tube Kit enables the installation of slosh tubes, preventing fuel surge in the float bowl. Additional modifications such as jetting adjustments, float tuning, velocity stacks, and choke plate removal further optimize fuel and air delivery for high-RPM racing.
The nickel-plated brass elbow fittings in this kit outperform OEM brass fittings. Their corrosion resistance makes them ideal for marine environments, where moisture and ethanol-blended fuels can degrade standard brass. They also withstand higher pressures and temperatures, ensuring consistent throttle response, improved fuel control, and increased carburetor longevity in race conditions.
For racers looking to enhance their Mercury WH-Series carburetors, installing a Slosh Tube Kit with nickel-plated brass elbow fittings is an essential upgrade. Whether stabilizing fuel for racing or converting a fishing carb to a competition-grade unit, this kit is the best solution for fuel system optimization.
Installation Guide: Press Fit & Drill Sizes
Proper installation of the Buckshot Racing #77 nickel-plated elbow fitting requires a secure press fit. Our fitting is ~.160", 1-2 thousandths oversized compared to OEM 22-94090, ensuring a solid replacement fit. Measuring each fitting and hole before installation is crucial, as tolerances can vary slightly due to manufacturing differences.
- For a light press fit, a #21 (0.159") drill bit should work well.
- For a tighter press fit, you might try 4.0 mm (0.1575") or even reaming slightly after drilling.
If an existing hole is too loose, JB Weld or high-strength retaining compound can restore a tight, leak-free seal. For best results, measure hole diameter with calipers before drilling.
Reaming after drilling improves precision, especially in steel, where accuracy is critical.
Selecting the correct drill size and installation method ensures the fitting remains secure under high-performance fuel system conditions.
