The Short Prop Nut from Buckshot Racing #77 is a NTE (Nylon Threaded Extension) Nylon Insert Lock Nuts are engineered to fit most all Mercury, Yamaha, OMC, Suzuki outboards, providing a low-profile, high-performance solution for drag racing, circuit racing, and other marine applications.
Unlike traditional brass Nylock prop nuts (OEM #11-827614), which measure .830 inches tall, the NTE Series prop nuts are just .400 inches tall. This compact jam nut design offers:
✅ Additional propeller spacing for optimized hydrodynamics
✅ Room for extra washers to ensure precise positioning
✅ Full nylon thread engagement for enhanced locking strength
Each NTE Series Short Prop Nut features zinc-finished steel construction, making it stronger than full brass nuts while remaining slightly softer than harder steel alloys to prevent galling and excessive wear on stainless steel prop shafts.

Why use a NTE Series Short Prop Nut?
🔹 Optimized for Mercury Racing & High-Performance Outboards – Perfect for outboard drag racing, circuit racing, bass boats, and offshore applications.
🔹 Low-Profile Thin Jam Nut Design – Only .400 inches tall, significantly shorter than the .830-inch standard Brass Nylock Prop Nuts (#11-827614).
🔹 Increased Adjustability – Allows for better spacing while ensuring full thread engagement.
🔹 Zinc-Finished Steel Construction – More durable than brass, yet less prone to thread galling than harder steel alloys.
🔹 1-1/16” Hex Drive – Matches Mercury and other OEM prop nut size for easy installation and proper torque application.
Why Replace Your Prop Nut?
A worn-out prop nut can lead to serious performance and safety issues:
⚠ Excessive propeller vibration – May cause gear chipping or internal damage to the lower unit.
⚠ Risk of propeller loss – If the nut backs off completely, the propeller can detach.
⚠ Reduced efficiency and performance – Improper prop positioning negatively affects hydrodynamics.
To prevent these problems, always torque the prop nut to 55 ft-lbs and align a flat surface with a washer tab, then bend up one of the washer tabs to secure it.
Reusing a worn or deformed nylon insert lock nut is not recommended. Over time, the nylon insert loses its locking strength, increasing the risk of loosening.
According to FAA and industry best practices, a mil-spec nylon lock nut should not be reused if it can be turned by hand once the insert engages the threads. The same principle applies to marine and racing outboard applications—always replace worn prop nuts to maintain gearcase longevity, performance, and safety.
